My new GO-TO for Chinese food in Toms River, NJ. Keeping my fingers crossed they keep the same owner/cooks which is a problem for most Chinese food establishments. It is about 9 miles from my house but sooooo worth the hike.
Definitely the best Chinese food on the island, hands down! (Well, technically, it's not on the island...and you have to drive from the island to get there but...you know what I mean!) A few family members suggested Hunan Garden for Chinese, and it is now a staple when we order take out. The place doesn't look like much from the outside, and the inside isn't that spectacular either. But man, do they make great Chinese food! We usually call in the order and pick it up - we've never tried getting it delivered. Stand outs are the egg rolls, boneless spare ribs, veggie lomein and fried rice, Genereal Tso's Chicken, string beans with garlic sauce...like any other American Chinese, there are a ton of options. It's greasy comfort food at its finest! I only give it four stars, however, because it sometimes takes an hour just to put in the order. It is clearly the best gig in town because when you call - especially on a weekend - the line is busy. It takes a village just to get your phone call through, i.e, more than two people calling at the same time, crossing your fingers, in hopes to get your order through. However, everyone is usually very polite and they do try to accomodate you as best as they can.
Hunan Garden makes such a delicious pan fried noodle dish!! Not that many Chinese restaurants make it here in T.R., so I was so excited when I saw it on the menu. Did not disappoint!! Subgum pan fried noodles is my favorite dish here. They give you so much, and it so tasty! Please try it, you will not be disappointed!
When I plan to review a Chinese restaurant I always order a PuPu Platter so I can try a bunch of appetizers! The beef on a stick and the Spring rolls were tasty. I don't love boneless spare ribs ever, next time I'll ask if they can do a couple of SpareRibs on the bone instead because they were flavorful. The sweet and sour chicken looked different in comparison to any other time I've had it.... oh my gosh it was so crispy! Never judge a book by its cover! The fried shrimp had the same crispiness. The only other thing I got was a pint of shrimp with lobster sauce. So good! Flavorful, a nice amount of shrimp and they were large. It had the bits of meat in it that I love, chopped scallion, egg, I will definitely get this from here again.
We've been eating there for the past 18 or 19 years and my daughter worked there during high school and for a bit afterward still (during A gap year/community college) for about six years. The owner is very nice and fair; And most importantly, the food always good and the place clean! Recommend!!
The 2 meals that we ordered were excellent including the soup and spring rolls. Plus it was ready for pickup on schedule.
This is our go-to for Chinese food. My in-laws are very picky and love this place. We always enjoy our meals. Get the spare ribs! The chicken wings were surprisingly good too.
